About the Warren Platner Side Table

Described by Platner as 'decorative, gentle, graceful design', this side table is an iconic piece of 60s modernism. The table's sculptural form is constructed from a series of vertical steel rods and finished with tempered, clear glass. This allows light to pass right through it, bringing a delicate airy feel to any space. At the same time, the table's compact form is exceptionally strong and sturdy, making it a versatile piece for your home. Team it with the matching Platner armchair and stool for elegant vintage style. Or, for a bolder look, mix it with contrasting shapes and materials like the geometric Mies van der Rohe Barcelona chair.

The story behind the Platner Side Table

While many of his contemporaries were exploring the merits of plastic and fibreglass, Platner was making furniture history with his iconic steel collection. Platner used wire rods to create sculptural, artistic pieces that became renowned for their understated elegance. His side table was designed in 1966 and inspired by the styles and shapes of the French Louis XV period. The use of an industrial material brings a modern twist to the design, and has contributed to its enduring popularity. The table featured in Edward Cullen's house in the Twilight films.

1919-2006 (United States)

Warren Platner graduated from the Cornell University School of Architecture in 1941, and soon after he started working in the offices of legendary designers Eero Saarinen and I.M. Pei. He opened his own New Haven office in 1967, which quickly became an important design studio, creating furniture, lighting and textiles, as well as interiors. Platner outlined the definition of a ‘classic’ as being: something that every time you look at it, you accept it as it is and you see no way of improving it.
